The Wonders of Wikipedia

One of my favorite things about the internet is the instant ability to fact-check, whether it be in order to find the answer to unimportant yet nagging questions or the ability to verify your own assertions. For example, the other day at work we were discussing the song Blinded By The Light (I have no idea why) and I stated that it was written by Bruce Springsteen and my coworkers were skeptical. I looked it up on Wikipedia to prove my corrected and stumbled upon this comic gem of a paragraph:

The song is notable for lead vocalist Chris Thompson's garbled enunciation, especially of the phrase "revved up like a deuce" which has led many fans to interpret it as "wrapped up like a douche". The original lyric is neither of the above, instead being "cut loose like a deuce." Springsteen once attributed the popularity of the Manfred Mann version partially to Thompson's enunciation.

Oh, and did you know this about Joaquin Phoenix?
On January, 26 2006, Phoenix was in a car accident on a winding canyon road that flipped his car over. The crash reportedly was caused by brake failure. Shaken and confused, Phoenix heard a tapping on his window and a voice say, "Just relax". Unable to see the man, Phoenix replied, "I'm fine. I am relaxed". The man replied, 'No, you're not'. At this point, Phoenix managed to see that the man was famed, eccentric German auteur Werner Herzog. After helping Phoenix out of the wreckage, Herzog phoned in an ambulance and vanished. Vanished!

A few weeks ago at trivia night, the bonus question was to name the Wahlberg siblings (Only in Boston...), two points for each correct answer. I later looked up Marky Mark to find out the answer, and holy crap, his Wikipedia entry is shocking. I knew he had a rough past but had no idea he had been such a hellion (um, he blinded a man during a robbery attempt?). Or that he has a tattoo of Sylvester the cat with Tweety in his mouth.

I just read Mark's Wikipedia entry and found out that he plays the father in the film adaptation of the book The Lovely Bones.

I didn't know they were making a movie of that book. It should be a great film because the book was very intense and the cast is superb.

I love being able to check the internet immediately for an answer to a totally unnecessary question. Like, "How old is Bruce Springsteen?" My son speculated around 40....but after watching him sing for several minutes MJ proclaimed he was in his 60's. No way!!! I was mortified to learn he is my age, "What the heck???" So it is Maria who introduced me to this ability, she is the only one who really looks these things up, usually upon her own suggestion. Especially since she is always sitting next to us with her laptop on her lap. (I think that was an incomplete sentence..)

MJ- Yeah, I found that out via wikipedia as well. Should be a good movie.

Mrs V- I look up stuff like that all the time. Oh, and how funny was it when Bruce slid into the camera during the half-time show? All of America got a close up of his nether-region.

We could have a movie club meeting at Lucky's after seeing The Lovely Bones. Of course, it would only be a one-time thing, but we'll call it a club anyway.

"Or that he has a tattoo of Sylvester the cat with Tweety in his mouth."

I first took this to mean he had a tattoo in his mouth, and though, wow, that must have hurt!

After reading this, Marky Mark is now my hero. How did you possibly leave out the fact that he had a video game career? I mean, Game Informer magazene gave the game a 0 out of 10; a ZERO out of 10.

And then there is this: "'If I get diesel (muscular), maybe I'll get some skins' (a reference to the labia)." I'm so thankful for the explanations.

Oh and there is this gem: "I wanna dedicate this book to my cock". My new goal in life is to dedicate something, anything really, to my cock.

Thanks Wikipedia for helping me procrastinate through my work day!

Kim- Yes, by leaving on the words "on his ankle" I did make it sound like the tattoo is actually in his mouth.

Matt- If I ever write up my thesis, I'm going to dedicate it to my ladybits. Really. Okay, not really. But now I kind of want to.

You can create your own bio of yourself on wikipedia. See what people contribute to your bio as "fact" or "fiction"...and you get to correct them.
Fun times.
