World Cup fever

The World Cup is coming! Let's put it in perspective: In 2005, 93 million viewers watched the Superbowl. 28 billion viewers are expected to tune in to the 2006 World Cup. The games begin on June 9, with the opening match between host Germany and Costa Rica. Here's the schedule.

To get yourself in the mood, here's some footage of Ronaldhino doing the same tricks as a kid as an adult.

That's amazing, considering the population of the world is only 6.5 billion.

Whoa, better check my sources! Well, it said 1.1 billion watched the world cup final in 2002, so I'm guessing that the 28 billion number comes from an estimation of the viewers of each of the 64 games in the world cup totalled up. Definitely feasible.

Yup, those figures are cumulative over the duration of the Cup. I love soccer, but listening to the folks on NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me tear it apart last weekend was pretty dang funny.

I'm definitely looking forward to the World Cup. Long lunches down the pub here we come. The US has the worst group possible and will have a hard time progressing. 28 billion still sounds like a lot - that's almost half a billion average per game. I thought the Super Bowl had more than 93 million viewers worldwide. That number seems low. Oh well.
